TMJ Disorder and Chinese Massage Therapy

TMJ disorder is not simply the result of “overusing the jaw muscles.” In traditional Chinese medicine, it reflects a deeper internal imbalance.

Kristina first tried a dentist’s night guard and physical therapy exercises for her jaw, hoping for relief, but the effects were minimal. Thinking there might be another approach, she decided to try Chinese Massage Acupressure Therapy and find me by searching a massage spa near me.

During the session, Kristina mentioned long-term emotional repression. She noticed her jaw always made a clicking sound when opening, her cheeks hurt when chewing hard foods, and the discomfort worsened before her menstrual cycle.

As her massage therapist , I asked her: “Do you often feel a blockage in your chest, and only sighing makes you feel better?” She nodded immediately. I explained: “The Liver in Chinese medicine governs the smooth flow of qi and nourishes the fascia. When liver qi is stagnant, it’s like a rope tightening around the tissues near the joint. Qi and blood don’t flow, so the joint’s movement is restricted. That’s why we need to release not only the fascia of the shoulders and neck, but also the fascia around the liver in the abdomen.”

For those with repeated TMJ symptoms — mouth opening becoming smaller, sticky saliva, weak chewing, and bowel movements that don’t flush clean — I often ask during the massage session : “Do you crave cold and sweet foods and sit still right after meals?” This points to spleen and stomach imbalance. Treatment includes reflexology for digestion, releasing the fascia of the shoulders and abdomen, and acupressure on Hegu (LI-4) while massaging the TMJ area.

Senior clients may also struggle. For example, Connie, 65, recently retired from teaching. Her TMJ pain grew worse: her mouth hurt to open, she tired easily from speaking, and she had low back soreness, tinnitus, and loose teeth. This is a classic case of kidney fluid deficiency. For her, I used gentle Swedish massage to relax the body, then applied warming herbal patches to Shenshu (BL-23) and Mingmen (DU-4), followed by foot massage and reflexology to activate yang energy and reduce TMJ pain. It looks like I did a full body massage for my clients. truly, most of the time, just one symptom, but consider relating your whole body, so I need time to do a full body massage.

Many clients search for “foot massage near me,” “massage parlor near me,” or “massage therapist near me” because they’re looking for natural, hands-on relief. Whether it’s a massage parlor for relaxation, Swedish massage for stress relief, or reflexology for internal balance, traditional Chinese Massage  techniques can go far beyond relaxation — they can help restore harmony to the whole body.
