Why Does Dandruff Get Worse in Virginia Winters — Even When Your Scalp Feels Oily?

A Real Scalp Case from Fairfax, VA

I work with many scalp clients in Fairfax, Virginia, and this is one of the most common things I hear:

“I washed my hair today, but tomorrow the dandruff will be back.”

I had a client come in today with exactly this issue.
Her scalp looked oily, but it didn’t feel healthy. It felt tight, reactive, and uncomfortable.

This is what I often see with a false oily scalp.

A Common Scalp Issue in Northern Virginia

In Northern Virginia, especially during colder months or when indoor heating is on, the air is extremely dry.

Dry air pulls moisture from the scalp.
When the scalp loses water, it tries to protect itself by producing more oil.

That’s why many clients in Fairfax, Vienna, and Oakton experience:

  • Oily scalp shortly after washing
  • Flakes appearing the next day
  • Itchiness without real inflammation

This is usually not true dandruff.
It’s dehydration.

What I Saw in Today’s Session

This client had:

  • Next-day dandruff after washing
  • Oily roots but tight scalp
  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Clear TMJ (jaw) tightness

Scalp health is rarely just about shampoo.
It’s connected to circulation, fascia, and nervous system tension.

How I Treated Her Scalp

1. I Hydrated Her Scalp First

Before applying any oil, I gently wetted her scalp with warm water.

Oil does not hydrate.
Water does.

This step alone often makes a big difference.

2. Herbal Oil + Scalp Gua Sha

I used a custom oil blend:

  • Castor oil
  • Magnesium oil
  • Thuja (arborvitae) leaves infused for one week

While applying the oil, I worked slowly with scalp gua sha to release tension and improve circulation.

3. Scalp Massage (15 Minutes)

I spent 15 minutes massaging her scalp, allowing the oil to seal in hydration.

The oil stayed on her scalp for about 30 minutes total.

4. Neck, Shoulder, and TMJ Release (15 Minutes)

I then worked on her neck, shoulders, and jaw.

TMJ tension affects blood flow to the scalp more than most people realize.
Releasing it supports long-term scalp balance.

Why This Approach Helps with Dandruff

When the scalp is properly hydrated and circulation improves:

  • Oil production becomes more balanced
  • Flaking slows down
  • The scalp feels calmer

Many clients notice less dandruff and less oil within days.

A Note for Clients in Fairfax and Nearby Areas

If you live in Fairfax, Vienna, Oakton, or surrounding Northern Virginia areas, and you’re dealing with:

  • Oily scalp but dry flakes
  • Dandruff that comes back quickly
  • Scalp tightness or sensitivity

Your scalp may not need stronger shampoo.
It may need hydration and nervous system support.

Final Thoughts

Scalp care is not about fighting oil.
It’s about restoring balance.

In my Fairfax practice, I see again and again that when hydration, circulation, and tension are addressed together, the scalp responds naturally.

Healthy hair starts at the scalp.
